What and, above all, how do you write about a woman, a photographer, who climbs into active volcanoes, who lives with indigenous peoples far from modern civilisation, who travels to regions of the world that few people have ever seen? We don't know! But we do know that no text can describe this adventure and do justice to her achievements. 10Photos presents: Germany's Lara Croft*, Ulla Lohmann.

More than just an adventurer, photographer and writer, Ulla is a multi-talented explorer. Best known as an expedition photographer and filmmaker, she has worked for renowned publications such as GEO and National Geographic. Other clients include the BBC, ARD, ZDF, Servus TV, Terra Mater and Red Bull Media House. Ulla is also a brand ambassador for Canon, F-stop Global Icon and a distinguished member of the DGPh and the Explorer's Club in New York. She teaches at the Fachhochschule Kaiserslautern and the Bildungszentrum Baden in Switzerland and leads workshops and photo expeditions around the world. Ulla is the patron of the 2024 Photo Summit in Oberstdorf.

As a teacher's child, she was driven by curiosity and the constant question "Why?", which Ulla says drove her classmates to despair, but spurred her to seek answers herself. At the age of 18, she was the national winner of the Jugend forscht competition out of more than 8,000 participants. She used the prize money to finance her first trip around the world and regularly reported on her experiences in a regional magazine. This laid the foundation for her exciting future life.

On one of her solo trips through the South Pacific, where a recently erupted volcano sparked her thirst for adventure, she happened to meet a team from National Geographic, who hired her as a cook. Her path to becoming an expedition photographer had begun. However, it took a long time and a lot of hard work and perseverance before Ulla made her scientific breakthrough. Over the course of more than 10 years, she gained the trust of an indigenous tribe in Papua New Guinea, and her resulting photo reportage of unknown mummies received worldwide acclaim.

Ulla is currently exploring and photographing the most remote corners of the world on expeditions, telling fascinating stories of unexplored places and their cultures. A particular milestone in her career was her participation in a scientific expedition into the interior of an active volcano, where she was the first woman in the world to enter completely new territory.

She has also photographed the world's highest volcanoes in Chile, dived into the deep sea and documented the beauty of the underwater world. But Ulla is also fascinated by the Alps and can often be found hiking there. Or, in true extreme photographer fashion, hanging from a rock face or climbing an ice waterfall in winter.

10Photos says: Above, we compared the likeable Ulla Lohmann to the fictional character Lara Croft. This comparison is, of course, a huge misnomer! Lara Croft can't take pictures. Ulla does, and how! Her pictures are fascinating not only because of their breathtaking motifs. Motifs from hostile, hellish regions. They also inspire with their ingenuity and very harmonious composition. Despite the most difficult conditions, Ulla succeeds in taking incredible pictures that show us unique forces of nature in their most beautiful form. We don't know what impresses us more, her courage or her photography. The combination is unique. But also her "normal" photos impress with their wonderful light moods and creative ideas. This is the first time we have written about 10Photos: Absolutely brilliant!
