Stefan Langenhof
Stefan Langenhof is a landscape photographer based in Ibbenbüren, in the Tecklenburg region of north-west Germany. Much of his work in his communication-intensive everyday life involves direct interaction with people. Photography provides a deliberate contrast to this, offering a space for reflection, silence and simplicity. As he pursues photography purely as a hobby, he is not committed to any particular genre. He allows himself the freedom to work intuitively, capturing landscapes, fog, nature, architecture and small scenes along the way. The motif always decides, not the category.

In recent years, he has predominantly worked with analogue technology. Not out of nostalgia, but out of conviction. This approach is slower, more focused and more streamlined. Without the ability to control the image immediately, the eye lingers longer on the subject. Decisions about whether to use black and white or colour are made in advance, sometimes using different cameras in parallel. Stefan uses analogue 35 mm and medium format cameras, often very old models, which he considers to be part of living photographic history. Ultimately, for him, it is not grain or pixels that matter, but the image.
His works are characterised by striking restraint. Often depicting minimalist scenes with fog, snow, water or empty spaces, they allow the essential elements to stand out clearly. Minimalism shapes his visual language in terms of both colour and composition. Muted tones, soft transitions and an almost meditative emptiness characterise many of his motifs. Whether it's individual posts in the ice, a jetty in the fog, bare trees in the snowfall, or a house façade in clear black and white, his images quietly tell stories of transience, silence, and space.
By doing this, it is clear that he is operating within the realm of artistic photography. The motifs serve more to capture atmosphere than to document it. His works often resemble visual poems: pared down, timeless, yet very much present.
And yes, this type of image composition can certainly be described as contemporary photography. This is not because it is loud or experimental, but because it reflects current viewing habits while also encouraging a conscious deceleration. Minimalist composition, reduction to form, light and structure, and a focus on emptiness are defining features of many contemporary photographic approaches. Stefan's distinctive, relaxed style fits right in here.
His pictures are not meant to be grasped quickly. They work through atmosphere, not spectacle. You have to look at them for longer to discover the details and tranquility. That is precisely where their strength lies.

10Fotos says: Stefan Langenhof condenses landscapes into shapes, light and space. His images are clearly composed and deliberately reduced, characterised by a great inner calm. Fog, snow, water and architecture become graphic surfaces and silent structures. Here, artistic photography is revealed in its purest form: concentrated and reduced to reveal great formal clarity. The consistent use of analogue techniques results in photographs that impress with their restraint, precision and atmosphere. They are less than a stylistic device and more than a statement.
