He is particularly fascinated by bears - an enthusiasm that began with an encounter in the Yukon and has led to several long-term projects. In Alaska's Katmai National Park, he camped for weeks with the world's largest brown bears and developed a deep understanding of their behaviour. His book on the project, Brown Bears in Central Europe Unter wilden Bären, published with Christine Sonvilla and Marc Grafvier, documents the behaviour of these fascinating animals in their habitat over four years. Among other things, Robert used photo traps to investigate how humans and predators live side by side, but also with each other. His dream is to one day photograph a wild brown bear in his native Austrian Alps.
Robert's landscape photography is stunning in its quality and diversity. From the icy regions of the Arctic to the rugged peaks of the Alps, from the vast expanses of the desert to the natural wonders of New Zealand, his images show nature in all its facets. His use of light to capture spectacular sunrises and sunsets is particularly striking. In addition, long exposures and harmonious colours create an atmospheric, often almost artistic depiction of the landscape. Whether aerial shots, exciting details or sweeping panoramas, his perspectives capture the charm of a place in a unique way.
A particular highlight is his illustrated book Norwegen – Reisen im Land der Fjorde, in which he documents his long-standing fascination with the Scandinavian country. From the deep fjords in the south, through the mountainous interior, to the islands of Lofoten and Vesterålen and the North Cape, he shows the spectacular scenery and gives an insight into Norway's special wildlife.
As well as photography, Robert is increasingly involved in photojournalism. His images raise awareness of environmental and conservation issues. Publications in GEO, BBC Wildlife and National Park magazines testify to his in-depth and authentic narrative style. Robert's work has won several international awards including 'Highlights of Nature Photography' and 'European Nature Photographer of the Year'.
Since 2010, the compassionate photographer has been sharing his knowledge by leading workshops and photo tours in Europe, North America and New Zealand, imparting not only technical skills but also a deep understanding of light, composition and animal behaviour.
