Pierre Steinhauer
Pierre Steinhauer, a photographer from the bell town of Gescher in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, pursues a striking and intimate form of portrait photography in his work entitled 'Ich bin - I am'. In his clear black and white photographs, he shows people presenting themselves in a unique moment of openness and honesty. He succeeds in visualising their vulnerability, fears and longings, as well as their joy and deepest emotions. Pierre consciously avoids digital perfection. He uses analogue photography to emphasise the authenticity and imperfection of his subjects. Digital images are too perfect - and people are not,' he says. This philosophy runs throughout his work: he is not interested in staged beauty, but in showing the subject in their true, unadulterated form. His sessions often have an almost therapeutic effect, as the people in front of his camera rediscover themselves. For the viewer, too, there is an intense moment in which you see not only the exterior of the people photographed, but can look deep into their souls.
The work of this sensitive photographer is anything but superficial or voyeuristic. Rather, they are a deeply emotional experience, sometimes complemented by touching texts written by the subjects themselves to accompany their images. These texts often reflect gratitude and a new view of oneself. In an age dominated by self-promotion and digital perfection, Pierre's honest images offer a pleasantly liberating alternative.
'Ich bin - I am' is not only the title of Pierre's photographs, but also the title of his moving book. It is the result of intense conversations and photo sessions with people in search of their own authenticity. These are people who come to Pierre in the hope of rediscovering a lost part of themselves and embarking on a journey to their true selves. In addition to his photographic work, Pierre also offers workshops in which he shares his perspective and techniques of portrait photography. The focus is not only on taking photographs, but also on reflecting and philosophising on what photography is all about.
