to the home page

Dr Martin Stock, a biologist and nature photographer from Rantrum in Nordfriesland, has been closely associated with the Wadden Sea since 1983. He discovered the fascination of this unique coastal landscape during his biology studies - as a community service volunteer on Hallig Langeneß. Martin worked as a biologist and photographer for the National Park Authority until 2021, and was deeply committed to the protection and preservation of the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. He continues to inspire many people with his knowledge and passion for this unique landscape.

The constant changes of the tidal sea - the grey-green shimmering water, the artistically shaped mudflats and the constant ebb and flow of the tide - reveal much more than just natural phenomena. They tell vivid stories of a coastal world in constant flux. And Martin's camera captures the magical moments, the moods of light and the dynamic structures of the Wadden Sea in such a way that the viewer is immediately immersed in the often harsh but always fascinating world of this landscape.

Reduction to the essential is his trademark: Often he needs only the sea, the broad horizon and a clear line to structure this fluid landscape. Through carefully chosen perspectives, the skilful use of light and shadow, balanced post-processing and even impressive aerial shots, he creates works that reflect both the transience and the timeless beauty of the Wadden Sea - a landscape that is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for good reason. Martin also photographs birds and other animals, as well as coastal buildings, always focusing on the majestic, ever-changing landscape.

Martin's impressive work is reflected in numerous publications. Around 30 books - including titles such as 'Wonderful World of the Wadden Sea' and 'Sea Landscapes' - as well as an annual large-format calendar, 'Wadden Sea National Park', have made his images known far beyond the coastal region. His photographs are also used in exhibitions, magazines and the public relations work of the two Wadden Sea National Parks. In addition to his artistic work, Martin is also active as a lecturer: in photo workshops lasting several days, he passes on his extensive experience and enthusiasm to ambitious nature photographers. He teaches not only technical skills, but also the art of capturing the perfect moment in the silence of nature.

His many years as a biologist and photographer have made him an indispensable ambassador for the uniqueness of the Wadden Sea. Martin's tireless commitment to conservation and his passion for capturing the fleeting moments of the changing tides in enduring images make him an exceptional artist who knows how to document the beauty and fragility of our natural world. The importance of his work is underlined by his own Wikipedia entry, which pays tribute to his commitment to the Wadden Sea.

10Photos says: Dr Martin Stock's photographs are inspiring because they immerse us in the pulsating rhythm of the Wadden Sea. His art of capturing the essential in striking, minimalist images conveys not only the fleeting play of light and colour, but also the deep emotionality and vulnerability of this unique landscape. It is this successful combination of scientific precision, artistic flair and authentic closeness to nature that makes his works true windows into a world where transience and beauty are powerfully intertwined. We don't know what fascinates us more, the man with his passion, his commitment to this unique nature, or his magnificent, extraordinary images. And it is with the greatest respect that we say in North Frisian: Dat as sa gud, det wi at ham nümm in Wüür faase köönt.¹
