Through extended periods abroad and exposure to other cultures, Maik has developed a broad understanding of beauty that goes far beyond conventional ideals. For him, beauty is more than just external attractiveness; it is the unmistakable presence and authenticity of a person. This view has had a lasting influence on his work. Discovering what is special about each individual and capturing it in an aesthetic image is a challenging motivation for the Hamburg-based photographer, one that keeps him going and allowing him to break new ground.

Born in Hamburg, Maik has a special connection to the water and the North German landscape, which is reflected in his photography. In his black and white photographs, often characterised by strong contrasts and expressive compositions, he captures people on land with clarity and intensity. But when his models enter the large aquarium, which he will complete and inaugurate in early 2024 after a long period of preliminary planning, a whole new artistic dimension unfolds. In this unique project, he immerses people - dressed or naked - in the colourful world of water. The photographs are an exciting and creative journey that the sensitive photographer takes with the people in front of his camera.

Maik's preference for manual lenses gives his work a unique character. Without autofocus, he gives each of his images his full attention, resulting in very precise compositions. He often deliberately uses blur as a creative stylistic device to refine the effect or create specific moods. This approach gives his photographs an individual technical finesse that makes them unmistakable.
