Katrin Blumenschein

to the home page

Born in the Taunus region of Germany and now based in Frankfurt, Katrin Blumenschein is a photographer with an unmistakable style. Her photographic journey began at an early age - as a child she captured everything that came in front of her lens. In 2006 she discovered her true passion for deliberate image composition and since 2016 she has focused on architecture and classic cars - two subjects that at first glance have little in common, but which develop exciting parallels in her work.

Katrin's sense of perspective and light is evident in her architectural photography. With patience and precision, she searches for angles that capture what makes a building special. She alternates between dynamic compositions and shots from a central perspective, giving the everyday an almost majestic effect. In her images, functional architecture becomes something timeless, often monumental - an effect reminiscent of the 'Düsseldorf School of Photography'. However, in contrast to the documentary rigour of this movement, Katrin imbues her subjects with a mysterious, almost cinematic atmosphere through sophisticated lighting and subtle, often dark tones.

A very different but no less artistic subject is her photography of classic cars. Here she combines her sense of detail with an extraordinary eye for form and surface. She emphasises paint, chrome and body lines with a high degree of plasticity - strong contrasts and precise lighting enhance the three-dimensionality of the cars, making their structures almost tangible. Even the owners of their classic cars often discover details in Katrin's photographs that they were previously unaware of. Her photographs give the classics a new value and elegance - as if they were not just automotive masterpieces, but timeless sculptures.

A common feature of both and a hallmark of her photography is the strong sense of depth created by the contrast between light and shadow. Her images play with muted, harmonious colours and often dominant dark moods - an aesthetic that is not only noble but also mysterious. This artistic signature runs through her entire portfolio and makes her work unmistakable.

Katrin Blumenschein has received numerous awards, including a gold medal at the Tokyo International Foto Awards (TIFA), first place at the International Photography Awards (IPA, Advertising: Automotive category) and a bronze medal at the Moscow International Foto Awards (MIFA). Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries, and in 2019 she was selected as one of the 100 special photographers by 'fotocommunity'.
