His academic training in ethnology and sociology in Freiburg and Montreal is reflected in his early work, which focuses on the cultural transformation of the Inuit. His first book, Pictures from the Arctic, documented impressions of the Canadian Arctic and established him as a photographer who looks beyond the surface.

Karl-Heinz has expanded his work from ethnological and ecological subjects to travel photography, always with the aim of going beyond tourist stereotypes. His aim is to capture the everyday life of different cultures and to convey the special character of a place. His photographs have been published in over 170 illustrated books and numerous calendars, as well as in renowned magazines such as GEO, ZEIT-Magazin and Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin.

In addition to his work as a photographer, at the end of the 1980s he founded his own publishing house, Foto-Edition-Raach, which publishes regional print products. As a member of organisations such as the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie and the picture agency LAIF, he remains an active part of the photography scene.

Karl-Heinz's photographs are characterised by their atmospheric depth. He focuses not only on the subject, but also on the mood of the image. Unusual perspectives and interesting foregrounds give his images a fascinating spatial depth. Fog and backlighting are often key elements in capturing the atmosphere of a place. Buildings that appear in his landscapes never seem out of place, but blend harmoniously into their surroundings and contribute to the overall work of art.

His images are a unique blend of documentation and artistic expression. His talent for highlighting the beauty of everyday landscapes is particularly remarkable. With a selection of photographs from his home region of Freiburg and the neighbouring Black Forest, he proves that spectacular landscape photography does not require exotic natural wonders.
