Holger Dörnhoff

to the home page

Holger Dörnhoff from Leverkusen, Germany, began his photographic journey at a young age - marked by unforgettable slide evenings with his family. Today, he is a passionate nature photographer who explores fascinating regions on his travels throughout Europe, but always returns to his roots at home. In Germany, but also in the neighbouring countries of Holland and Belgium, he demonstrates that authentic and impressive motifs can often be found right on your doorstep - if you look closely enough.

As a self-taught photographer, Holger began to take photography more and more seriously in the mid-1990s. His photographer friend Thomas Wester once affectionately called him the 'detail fox' - a nickname that aptly describes his keen eye for the essential. Holger doesn't keep the viewer guessing for long, but clearly shows what he wants to show and what inspires him.

In addition to documentary landscape images and the occasional animal portrait, his portfolio includes detailed close-ups of plants, small insects and amphibians, as well as abstract, artistic images. With a sure instinct for composition, he masterfully plays with light and shadow, bokeh effects, long exposures and the deliberate use of blur to create a fascinating balance between dynamism and stillness. In this way, Holger captures the subtle interplay of nature and its often overlooked details - be it the last rays of the day or geometric shapes emerging from the shadows. He is particularly fascinated by the interplay of water and nature - whether in babbling brooks, tranquil ponds, large lakes or on the coast.

When taking photographs, Holger attaches great importance to carefully considered composition - a care that is reflected in the fine and detailed development of his raw files in post-production. He deliberately chooses different approaches - whether in original colour, as a deliberate black-and-white version or in a low-key/high-key look - to bring out the natural mood of his subjects. However, he avoids elaborate montages and the use of artificial intelligence.

In addition to his creative work, Holger shares his knowledge through short lectures and one-day seminars he gives to photography clubs and local conservation organisations. As an active member of the GDT and other supporting organisations, he is committed to authentically communicating the beauty and value of nature photography. Despite winning several awards such as 'Glanzlichter' and 'GDT Nature Photographer of the Year', Holger rarely enters competitions these days. Instead, he concentrates on presenting his work to interested photography enthusiasts and fostering direct dialogue.
