Hermann Otto Ehlers
Hermann Otto Ehlers was born in 1957 and lives in Hamburg. He has been working with photography since 1985, initially on black and white film, and now mainly digital. His central theme is portrait photography, from which other areas such as nudes, life and stills have developed over the years. He consistently avoids the use of colour as a means of composition in order to focus the eye on the essential, regardless of the subject.

His credo 'Pictures are superficial. Sometimes they become a window to what is behind them.' This aptly describes his philosophy: in portrait photography, he is not concerned with mere representation, but with the real person behind the façade. This is also reflected in his image processing - you will look in vain for digital smoothing or perfect surfaces in his work. Instead, he leaves room for textures, details and imperfections that enhance the personality and authenticity of his subjects.
Hermann's work shows that portrait and nude photography is much more than the depiction of perfect bodies or staged poses. His photographs are snapshots of life - honest, unadulterated and at the same time sensitive. They celebrate the natural beauty of people, including their flaws, which are not concealed but deliberately incorporated. As a result, his portraits are authentic and emotional, showing vulnerability and character. Hermann's pictures often tell emotional stories, characterised by longing and fantasy.
An essential aspect of his work is the use of natural light. Hermann prefers to shoot outdoors or in the familiar surroundings of his models. This approach and his calm, friendly demeanour create an informal atmosphere that is reflected in his images - atmospheric, intimate and full of creative nuance. Hermann's images thrive on gentle contrasts and soft light, often in shades of grey rather than pure black and white. The result is finely balanced work that enhances existing emotions and conveys an extraordinary intensity.
