Heiko Westphalen
Heiko Westphalen is a photographer and artist from Flensburg, Germany, whose work is characterised by its versatility and attention to detail. Heiko discovered his passion for photography in the 1970s when he developed his own images in the darkroom and was fascinated by the magic of the photographic process. He spent the formative years of his artistic development in Berlin, where he lived from 1979 to 1989 and captured the vibrant atmosphere of the divided city in his photographs. It was here that he began an intense exploration of photography that has continued to this day.

He has been working intensively with digital photography since 2012. Image editing is a central component of his work, which he always uses carefully to preserve the essence of the shot. Heiko combines professional techniques with a strong artistic approach.
He likes to drift for hours in search of a subject, always looking for the unexpected moment. Instead of staged scenes, he prefers spontaneous shots that capture the magic of the moment. Travels to India and South America in the 1980s shaped his perspective, as did his impressions of his native Germany. He finds extraordinary subjects in the vibrant metropolis of Berlin as well as in the idyllic surroundings of Flensburg.
Heiko's work is characterised by remarkable versatility, thoughtful composition and subtle colour contrasts. He often incorporates symmetries that contrast with the elements that define the image, creating tension. With this minimalist approach, he succeeds in visualising the extraordinary in the everyday, taking the viewer on a visual journey of discovery. Another key design feature of his paintings is the deliberate arrangement of lines, textures and surfaces that provide the eye with a clear guide through the image. A successful combination of harmony and creativity that immediately catches the eye and captivates the viewer.
Another aspect of his work is the presentation of the photographs. Heiko loves the XPan format and prints his work on fine art paper, which brings out the elegance and detail. Heiko is also passionate about alternative printing and combines this with his artistic work. For example, he prints selected photographs onto materials such as natural stone tiles, which he sells through specialist art dealers.
His pictures have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Flensburg and beyond. He also regularly organises his own exhibitions to make his work accessible to a wider audience. A highlight of his work to date are the illustrated books 'Abenteuer Berlin' and 'Sehreise Flensburg', published in 2024. The Berlin volume reflects the special connection to the city that accompanied him during the formative period of his life, while the Flensburg volume is dedicated to his current home. Both works demonstrate the amiable photographer's ability to document places in all their facets in an authentic and artistically sophisticated way.
