Heiko Riekers
Heiko Riekers, from Bremen, Germany, was born in 1951 and discovered his passion for photography at an early age. At the age of 12, he was already experimenting with his father's 6×6 camera and learning about the fascinating world of image development in the improvised darkroom in his parents' cleared out wardrobe. These early experiences sharpened his eye for the play of light and shadow and laid the foundation for his later creative work.

He bought his first analogue SLR camera in 1968 and became very involved with photography in many areas before taking a long break from it due to work commitments. Around 2010, he began a new phase of his artistic career with digital equipment. He focused on street, people and landscape photography, developing a distinctive minimalist style.
For Heiko, street and landscape photography offers the opportunity to capture unique, fleeting moments - moments that touch the viewer in their uniqueness and reveal the often overlooked details of everyday life. He photographs things he knows and loves from his immediate surroundings, proving that true art can often be created from spontaneous snapshots. His approach is pragmatic: with reduced equipment, often just one lens, and no frills, he captures the authentic scenes he encounters on his forays.
His images are often characterised by a minimalist approach, in which individual elements that are effective in the image are very present despite their small size. Heiko works predominantly in black and white, using subtle colour tones to reinforce the message of the image. By skilfully alternating between short and long exposures, he is able to capture both dynamic movement and calm, almost meditative moods in his photographs.
Another focus of his work is portraiture of artists and performers. He uses strong contrasts to bring out the energy and expressiveness of his subjects. With a keen sense of the decisive moment and the targeted use of light and shadow, he is able to create a special depth of image that emphasises the dynamic and artistic character of the subjects. His portraits become vivid documents that capture not only the appearance but also the mood of the moment.
Heiko has been an active member of the Camera Club Bremen, the DVF and the Fotoforum since 2012. During this time, he has not only participated in numerous workshops and exhibitions, but has also demonstrated his unmistakable photographic signature in many competitions. He received an Honourable Mention at the B&W Spider Awards, recognition at the DVF Canvas Festival and an award in the DVF Nordmark Portfolio. The Minimalist Photo Award and the Monochrome Awards are further accolades that impressively demonstrate his high recognition value.
