Frederick Fairytale
Berlin-based photographer Frederick Fairytale¹ knows how to tell stories through images, combining the charm of the 60s and 70s with modern technology. His work treads the fine line between past and present - a fascinating dialogue that puts people first. He stages his subjects with great attention to detail, creating images that reveal not only their appearance, but also their personality and character. He remains true to the human element, even when his photographs do not hide the world's colourful diversity.

During a groundbreaking shoot in 2018 in an old shared flat in the urban heart of Berlin, he realised how passionate he was about a creative approach. Using only fixed focal lengths - 23mm, 35mm and 50mm - he not only captures spatial contexts, but also creates a dreamy, almost cinematic atmosphere by deliberately opening the aperture wide. He is not afraid to blur the boundaries between technical precision and artistic intuition, which gives his images a special, authentic flavour.
Simultaneously, he experiments with lighting conditions that others would struggle with. Rather than adding light sources, he makes the most of the light available - be it the warm flicker of candles, the dim glow of a streetlamp, or the diffuse daylight on an overcast day. Frederick doesn't mind high ISOs when they help capture the mood of a moment without distorting it. For him, noise is not a flaw, but a characteristic element that adds an organic depth to the images, sometimes deliberately enhanced.
In addition to his single shots, he often creates series of images that more clearly express emotional relationships and collaboration. Here he shows that a person is more than just a body - their charisma, the atmosphere of the moment, but also their surroundings say as much about them as their appearance. Frederick is interested in making personalities tangible, capturing moods and moments that would otherwise fade away. This is why the physical presence of an image is so important to him: he firmly believes that printed photographs have a very special, lasting value - memories that can be rediscovered and enjoyed years later in old shoe boxes. He is undoubtedly right!
