Dennis Marso

to the home page

Dennis Marso, born in the mid-1980s and raised in Reinbek, lives with his family in a house with a garden in Dassendorf on the eastern outskirts of Hamburg and is the proud father of two wonderful children. Happily married since 2012, he finally discovered his passion for astronomy and astrophotography in 2020, which he has been pursuing part-time since October 2022.

His interest in the night sky began early: when the comet Hale-Bopp was visible for months in 1997, the then 12-year-old Dennis became fascinated with the universe. A small plastic telescope his parents bought him gave him his first glimpse of the cosmos. But his enthusiasm quickly faded, and it was nearly 20 years before his interest was rekindled. A gift in 2016, a Skylux 700mm refractor, brought Dennis back into contact with astronomy. In particular, the phases of Venus that he was able to observe with it revived his old fascination. Impressive observations of Jupiter, Saturn and the Andromeda galaxy soon followed. The "astro fever" had finally caught up with him.

With increasingly better equipment - including powerful telescopes, filters and eyepieces - and 390x magnification, Dennis was able to see impressive details of the surface of Mars and even the polar ice caps. But it wasn't until he purchased a digital SLR camera and the latest astrophotography technology that he was able to fulfill his dream of moving from pure observation to creating compelling images that capture the beauty and wonder of the night sky.

In his work, Dennis emphasizes the naturalness of the photographs. Long exposures and special filters reveal colors that the human eye alone could never capture. While many astrophotographers use software to artificially assign colors, Dennis tends to stay classic and authentic. As a result, his images appear clear, atmospheric, and realistic without over-dramatizing the sky. This restraint enhances his work, showing the universe as it presents itself to the viewer in all its natural beauty.

In addition to photography itself, Dennis offers a range of services, including purchasing advice for beginners, coaching on special image processing in astrophotography and courses at the Dassendorf adult education center. On his YouTube channel he shares his extensive knowledge of visual astronomy and provides valuable tips for both beginners and experienced astrophotographers.

10Photos says: It is fascinating to see the equipment Dennis Marso uses to capture such impressive images of the universe. It doesn't require a huge telescope on a mountain, but equipment that fits in the trunk of a car. The experienced photographer uses it to discover the secrets of the universe - gas nebulae, distant galaxies - and brings them closer to us with his passion and his photographs. His images show us not just a black sky with white dots, but a new world full of detail and structure. Thank you, Dennis, for these more than fascinating insights and your impressive photography!
