Space: the final frontier. These are the journeys of the photographer Cristian Vulpescu. His years-long mission: to explore distant worls, to seek out new scenes and new compositions, to boldly capture what no one has photographed before. Almost everyone knows the legendary opening credits of Star Trek. We've rewritten them slightly for Christian - and they capture the essence of his enthusiasm. A passion that resembles a fantastic voyage of discovery without limits.

But back to earth - to Ebermannstadt in Upper Franconia, north of Nuremberg, where Bremerhaven-born Christian Vulpescu has his own practice as a gynaecologist. For him, astrophotography is a wonderful balance to his often hectic day-to-day work as a doctor - an opportunity to immerse himself in the vastness of the universe in a relaxed way. Fascinated by the complexity of this hobby, he took up the challenge in the early 2000s and has since set up two mounts in his garden to obtain precise and sophisticated images, even with exposure times of several hours - sometimes all night.

As a doctor, Christian is used to working conscientiously, precisely and analytically - qualities that are essential in his astrophotography. Every step, from precise planning to concentration, is important to him in order not to overlook details and to avoid mistakes, which can have fatal consequences with such long exposure times.

He specialises in deep sky photography. He is particularly fascinated by photographing emission nebulae, light-years away, where stars are born. A birth - as the likeable gynaecologist and photographer knows all too well - is something special. The enormous luminosity of the young stars makes the surrounding gases and dust particles glow in all sorts of colours, revealing unexpected structures. Using special filters that allow only certain wavelengths of light to pass through, he transforms ordinary light into colourful works of art - a technique that has its origins in analogue photography, but today produces impressive results using modern image processing methods.

As well as star formation, Christian also explores other celestial phenomena such as the remnants of supernovae, the dramatic explosions of particularly large stars. Using the same photographic techniques, he creates images of abstract beauty, depicting the universe in all its diversity. Filigree structures, luminous star clusters, dark regions of dust, but also distant galaxies outside our Milky Way whose light takes millions of years to reach us - he shows 'worlds' that we otherwise only know from science fiction films.

His stunning images are regularly featured in astronomical calendars as outstanding examples of modern astrophotography. Christian has received several awards from his peers for his technical precision and artistic vision.

Chapeau, Christian!
