Berthold Grünhagen

to the home page

Berthold Grünhagen from Taunusstein, near Wiesbaden, Germany, is a nature photographer who has dedicated himself to wildlife and macro photography for decades. His fascination with animals and their habitats has been with him since his youth - a passion he deepened by studying biology. Whether in local forests or travelling to distant lands, he is always looking for the perfect moment to capture the beauty of an animal in its natural environment. For him, photography is not just about pressing the shutter button, but also about patience, knowledge and a deep understanding of the behaviour of the creatures in front of his lens.

Berthold's day often begins long before sunrise, as the best light and most intense observations are made in the early hours of the morning. Respect for the animals and their habitat is paramount. Love the animals you photograph and be interested in their way of life' is one of his guiding principles. This attitude is reflected in his photographic work: he observes closely, causes as little disturbance as possible and, if necessary, uses camouflage to achieve authentic, natural shots.

Berthold prefers a soft, natural colour scheme in his paintings. The colours often appear slightly desaturated or in pastel shades, creating a calm, harmonious atmosphere. However, he does add certain accents, such as strong yellows or greens in macro shots, or the rich brown of a bird. This subtle but deliberate use of colour gives his photographs a special elegance that is not intrusive, but enhances the naturalness of the scene.

His composition is clearly structured and characterised by a minimalist approach. He often uses an open aperture to gently separate the subject from the background. This creates an almost painterly effect that inevitably draws the focus to the animal. His precision is particularly evident in macro photography: Extreme close-ups reveal details that would otherwise remain hidden to the human eye. His use of light is also remarkable. Soft, natural lighting creates a three-dimensional depth that brings each image to life.

His exceptional eye for detail won him first prize in the macro category of the prestigious 'The Nature Photography Contest' - an honour that underlines his ability to combine the beauty of nature with technical perfection and artistic flair.
