Benedikt Ernst

to the home page

Born in Aachen, and now living in Cologne, Germany, people photographer Benedikt Ernst has had a remarkable career. From jazz club operator and web designer to business studies, his path eventually led him to photography - a passion that has shaped his life since the early 2000s.

With an unmistakable style that focuses on the aesthetics of reality, he has carved out a place for himself in the world of black and white photography. His strengths lie primarily in portraiture, nudes and fashion, but social photography is also playing an increasingly important role in his work.

Benedikt has an approach that focuses on authenticity. For me, photography is not about the perfect image," he says. Instead, he seeks beauty in the imperfect and unfiltered. His work reflects reality without distorting or judging it, capturing moments in their pure form. This understanding of photography allows him to explore social and cultural issues as well as portraiture and fashion when he travels. In particular, his reportage, often from unsafe regions, highlights abuses and gives a face to minorities.

His paintings fascinate with their reduction to the essential: Light and shadow. Whether in the studio, on the street next door or in distant regions, whether portrait or nude, the play of contrasts and skilfully chosen backgrounds remains his trademark. Benedikt reduces the world to its essentials, often achieving maximum effect with minimalist aesthetics, leaving room for the viewer's own interpretation. His editorials and reportages tell stories with both clarity and depth.

Benedikt's work has been featured not only in numerous exhibitions, but also in prestigious publications such as Swan Magazine. A particular highlight of his work is the book 'Tolima', in which he documents the results of his two trips to the Colombian province of the same name. With sensitive images and profound observations, he tells the story of the indigenous Pijao and Nasa Wes'x communities he visited. Both communities live in difficult conditions, often marginalised by society and severely affected by climate change. His photographs give these people a voice and draw attention to their challenges - a visual documentation that goes far beyond the aesthetic dimension and demonstrates social responsibility.

10Photos says: What makes his work so special is not only its technical perfection, but also the emotional resonance it evokes. Benedikt Ernst is able to capture people, places and moments with an intensity that is instantly moving. His images invite us to look, to reflect and to see people through his eyes - reduced, honest and artistic at the same time. The authenticity that characterises him as an artist and his work makes Benedikt a photographer who not only documents, but also brings a piece of life into the quiet world of images. We are more than impressed, this is photography you can feel and not just see. We award him a particularly valuable rating.
