André Wagenzik

to the home page

André Wagenzik has been a freelance photographer in Berlin since 1992. During the coronavirus crisis, he found himself in a difficult situation when all booked assignments were cancelled at short notice and the demand for photographers almost completely collapsed. In search of a new perspective, he and his family found a creative and financially viable solution on an organic farm in Lindow, Brandenburg. For three and a half months, he documented life on the farm - in particular the intense, personal interaction with the cows - and helped with all the work that needed to be done. The resulting photographs are at the heart of his selection for 10Photos.

André's work on this project is characterised by a clear, minimalist visual language, primarily in black and white. Through the deliberate use of unconventional perspectives and a focus on the essential, he enhances the emotional impact of his photographs. His images reveal both the dynamic and serene aspects of rural life, ranging from carefully composed shots where he allows his 'relaxed models' plenty of time, to spontaneous moments that capture the true essence of the animals. The result is a collection of photographs with rare emotional depth and an atmosphere that is both touching and authentic.

Today, André works as a freelance photographer in Berlin, specialising in press and event photography, reportage, architectural photography and much more. His time on the farm opened up new perspectives and sharpened his eye for the emotional. After these experiences, he went on to do more freelance work, which is no less creative and exciting because his images are not mainstream. He shows the extraordinary in a special way: honest and unadorned. Not only the shiny sides of our world, but also its rough edges. Authentic and taken from the heart of life. Despite the artistic expression, the natural character of his photographs remains intact.

Over the years, André Wagenzik has also published high quality, limited edition photo books such as 'Allerleirauh', 'Son Serra de Marina', 'Venice' and 'Unterwegs'. Printed on the finest photographic paper, these books underline the artistic quality of his work and convey a lasting value that goes beyond the mere content of the image.

An important project that André worked on for two years will be honoured in a special way in 2025: From 8 April to 7 May 2025, his major exhibition 'Stasi imprisonment' will be on display in the Paul-Löbe-Haus of the Bundestag in Berlin. It will feature 100 powerful portraits of former Stasi prisoners - a moving exploration of an important chapter in German history. It is also a story of people who must not be forgotten - especially today, when hatred, hostility and intolerance are omnipresent and threaten to shake the foundations of our democracy.
